Trabant Car Logo and Trabant history

Trabant Car history

Auto Union AG, whose factories were located in Prussian Saxony which belonged in part to Audi's founder, August Horch, was expropriated during the arrival of the Red Army. By 1948, the Zwickau plant began construction of a car designed by the company before the Second World War, under the model name F8. It formed the basis of the first Trabant 601 (1957) [1].

The Trabant, which was originally a small economic car and became robust, due to lack of innovations that made him a model hopelessly outdated, the symbol of the economic collapse of the GDR. This lack of renewal should not obscure the remarkable talents of engineer who oversaw the design of the car: its architecture is a logic hard to beat, the spirit of simplification is beautifully produced, each solution represents a Break Compromise (almost always) between a successful industrial cost price and a minimum response as appropriate as possible to the specifications. The engine was mounted in front, is placed in transverse position, which is at the time an innovation.

The Trabant clearly satisfies the Stoic precept "nothing too", which is a way to get closer to perfection (hence its status as a cult car). Some examples: no water pump or oil pump or oil system, not even a gas pump because gravity provides the fuel. The transverse leaf spring suspension, though rather brief, high tolerance for modest performance of the vehicle. Braking is surprisingly effective despite four drums, designed for taking into account the total absence of engine braking because of the presence of a freewheel designed to avoid clamping piston engine running on this mixture. Because of vibration, the logbook recommended to ensure at least once a year as screws and bolts are tight.

It is far from the promises of the drawing board to reality vehicle lambda. Aging production facilities, while it reduced costs, severely degraded the quality. The choice of a plastic body was daring at the time, and no further development perpetuating the lack of reliability and endurance of certain parts of synthetic material. The suspensions were subjected to multiple damage, as well as electrical equipment.

But the car could be repaired and talk "at home" with simple hand tools. The two-stroke cycle used for the engine because of the simplicity and economy of manufacture, and because it was typical powertrain DKW prewar used, was doomed to disappear from the automotive landscape . Its consumption was strong, given the performance delivered. As for its pollution, it is better not to speak ... In spite of these frustrating issues, the Trabi is a marvel of technical intelligence and a vehicle more fun to drive than one might imagine.

Between 1957 and 1991 he was made 3 051 385 copies, the latter being a copy pink [2]. In 2007, there were about 52 400 copies in circulation in Germany [2]. During its production period, it was the only car in the world to claim as much of that new opportunity due to waiting times averaging between ten and fifteen years [2].
