Jaguar logo history

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a carnivorous mammal, related to the leopard and the family of felines. This is one of four "big cats" of the genus Panthera, with the tiger, lion and leopard. Its current range extends from Mexico across much of Central America and South America to northern Argentina and Paraguay. Apart from occasional wandering jaguars from Mexico, the jaguar is a species extirpated from the United States since the early 1970s.

This cat looks physically spotted leopard, but is generally larger and more massive appearance. In addition, its habitat and behavior have characteristics closer to those of the tiger. While dense rainforest is its preferred habitat, the jaguar accommodates a wide variety of forest and open terrain. It is strongly associated with the presence of water and the tiger is a cat who loves to swim. The jaguar is solitary predator, who hunts on the lookout, while being opportunistic in prey selection. It is also a superprédateur which plays an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating the populations they hunt. He has developed a powerful bite exceptional, even compared to other big cats, which allows it to penetrate the shells or carapaces of reptiles and to employ a method of killing unusual: it bites directly into the skull of its prey and book a fatal blow to the brain.

The jaguar is a species near threatened (NT) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its numbers are declining. It is particularly threatened by the destruction of its habitat more or less linked to the fragmentation écopaysagère. While international trade in jaguars or their derivatives is prohibited, the jaguar is still regularly killed by humans, especially when it comes into conflict with ranchers and farmers in South America. Although reduced, its range remains large. Given its historical distribution, the jaguar has featured prominently in the mythology of many cultures, including the Mayans and Aztecs.
